Basic Boat Maintenance Guide
As a responsible boat owner, you’ll want to do everything you can to protect your investment. That’s why performing boat maintenance is so important.
Keep Your Boat Clean
Regularly wash your boat with soap and water to remove dirt, salt, and other debris that can damage the exterior of the boat. Use a soft sponge or cloth to avoid scratching the surface. Sweep the deck and remove all trash every time you leave your boat.
Do an Exterior Inspection
Inspect the hull of the boat for any signs of damage, such as cracks or dents. Repair any damage promptly to prevent water from seeping into the hull and causing further damage. Check the propeller for any signs of damage or wear. Replace the propeller if necessary to ensure optimal performance.
Top Off Engine Fluids
Check the engine oil levels regularly and top up as needed. Change the engine oil and oil filter according to the manufacturer's recommendations. Inspect the fuel system for any leaks or damage. Replace any worn or damaged fuel lines, filters, or fittings to prevent fuel leaks.
Inspect Battery & Steering
Check the battery for corrosion and ensure it is securely fastened in place. Test the battery regularly and replace it if it is no longer holding a charge. Inspect the electrical system for any loose or corroded connections. Clean and tighten any connections as needed to ensure proper electrical function. Check the steering and control systems for smooth operation. Lubricate any moving parts as needed to prevent binding or sticking.
Store Boat Securely
Store your boat properly when not in use to protect it from the elements. Cover the boat with a tarp or store it in a covered storage area to prevent damage from sun, rain, and snow.
